Description

This handheld digital refractometer MISCO is designed especially for car service stations that take care of the maintenance of cars, trucks and buses. It is equipped with two scales for measuring ethylene glycol-based and propylene glycol-based antifreezes and coolants, with two scales for testing of freezing point of ethanol-based and methanol-based windscreen washer fluids and with one scale for measuring of synthetic urea (especially liquid additive AdBlue®).

Because the ethylene glycol-based and propylene glycol-based fluids are also used as heat transfer fluids in technological systems (solar collectors, heat pumps, etc.) is this refractometer suitable for controlling of thermal systems fillings.

Digital refractometer MISCO is equipped with the sample well made from stainless steel. The measuring sample can be covered by an evaporation cover which prevents sample evaporation or air moisture absorption.
Use always this cover you get more accurate results.

The measuring prism is made from sapphire glass. The sapphire glass is the next hardest substance to diamond and that is why the prism is a virtually unscratchable surface.

The user interface of this digital refractometer MISCO consists a large backlit 24-character display and two buttons - "GO" and "MENU". The measurement is therefore very intuitive and easy. The measured value is displayed including the unit. You need not remember meaning of any code because the display of this size allows to show full text messages, warnings or errors.

Scale for measuring of ethylene glycol-based antifreezes, coolants and heat transfer fluids

The scale for measuring of freezing point (frost resistance) of ethylene glycol-based antifreezes (EG, sometimes is called as mono ethylene glycol/monoethyleneglycol MEG). This digital refractometer MISCO measures the freezing point with the precision higher than ±1 °C.

Scale for measuring of propylene glycol-based antifreezes, coolants and heat transfer fluids

The scale for measuring of freezing point (frost resistance) of propylene glycol-based antifreezes (PG, sometimes is called as mono propylene glycol/monopropyleneglycol MPG). This digital refractometer MISCO measures the freezing point with the precision higher than ±1 °C.

Scale for measuring of ethanol-based windscreen washer fluids

Most of the windscreen washer fluids (screen washes) on the market are based on the ethanol (ethylalcohol, alcohol). These fluid mixtures are save in terms of maintenance of the vehicle as well as in terms of health. This digital refractometer MISCO measures the ethanol-based windscreen washer fluids freezing point with the precision higher than ±1 °C.

Scale for measuring of glycerol-based windscreen washer fluids

Glycerol (glycerine, glycerin) used as the main antifreeze ingredient. That is why there is a scale for measuring of glycerol-based fluids freezing point in this car/automotive digital refractometer MISCO. It measures the freezing point with the precision higher than ±1 °C.

Scale AdBlue® / DEF

Due to global pressure to reduce emissions occurred in Europe and the U.S. to tighten exhaust emission limits. With the planning of the emission standard Euro 4 (effective from 2005) have been developed technologies which reduce nitrogen oxides NOx in exhaust gases of vehicles with diesel (compression-ignition or "CI") engine. Currently produced vehicles comply with the emission standard Euro 5 (in U.S. with emission standards issued by EPA). It is thanks to technology called Selective Catalytic Reduction SCR which is based on the principle of injecting a urea aqueous synthesis solution (AdBlue® in Europe, DEF in U.S.) into exhaust gases. As a result of catalytic reduction are harmful nitrogen oxides NOx decomposed to pure nitrogen N and completely harmless water vapor H2O.

The proper concentration of synthetic urea aqueous solition (for AdBlue® it is 32.5 percentage by weight) is crucial for the reducing the amount of NOx emitted from the exhaust system. It is also important in terms of life of the each SCR system component. Even a small deviation ± 0.8 % may have a major impact on the non-compliance of the emission standards and may also mean higher costs for vehicle maintenance.
This digital refractometer MISCO measures the urea concentration with the precision higher than ±0.1 %.

The calibration

The calibration is performed by distilled water (eventually by ordinary tap water) and it takes just a few seconds.
We recommend to clean and dry wipe the measuring prism prior to measurement!

TIP: Would you like to measure more characteristics? Build own special refractometer!

The measurement

Place a few drops of the liquid onto the sapphire prism at the bottom of the sample well. Close the evaporation cover and allow some time for the temperature to equalize. Press the "GO" button and the result value will be displayed in a few seconds.

The measurement precision

The precision of the MISCO digital refractometers provides the Palm Abbe OPTICAL-ENGINE®. This Optical-Engine uses high-precision optics with a linear detector array containing 1024 elements (seven times more elements than refractometers from other producers).
This detector array allows to measure with the precision higher than ±0.1 °Bx.

The measuring results measured by the digital refractometer MISCO is comparable to mid-range benchtop refractometers costing thousands of euro more!
Digital refractometer MISCO is a laboratory precision instrument for a reasonable price.

Automatic temperature compensation

Digital refractometers MISCO have a nonlinear temperature compensation, each scale has an individual compensation basis.
Temperature compensation is automatic between 0 and 50 °C (32 to 122 °F).
